Orchestra & Strings (Grades 2–4)

MAKE MUSIC WITH YOUR FRIENDS!

The LS Orchestra is an advanced ensemble for students who have been playing the violin or cello for multiple years and have secure music reading skills. Private lessons are not required, but encouraged. Students will play selections written for beginning and intermediate orchestras, with an emphasis on blend, balance, musicality, listening, and the development of ensemble rehearsal and performance skills. The orchestra will give three formal concerts and several informal performances throughout the year for family and friends.

LED BY LJCDS: Joan Diener and Kelley Hart, who together lead a program that has been part of Country Day for more than thirty years.

Program highlights

• Small in-school groups: weekday group lessons during PE class and recess give students individual attention.
• Larger after-school ensemble: an after-school class that brings players together for a string-orchestra experience.
• Reading comes first: note and rhythm reading are emphasized throughout so students become independent musicians.
• A deep repertoire: dozens of songs at varying levels of difficulty.
• At least two concerts a year: performances mark progress and give students something to play toward.
• Students leave with the skills to play an instrument and a group of friends they made while playing it

Ways to take part

• Orchestra, Grades 2–4: For advanced players who are confident readers. Meets after school on Thursdays, 3–4:15 p.m., with two group lessons during the school day as well. Students audition in the fall for placement; second graders must also study privately outside school. At least three concerts a year. Fee: $600 per year.
• Strings, Grades 3 & 4 — two group lessons each week during the school day, one in a PE class and one at recess. There is no after-school component and no fee —families just submit the registration form.
