Middle School Book Club (Grades 5–7)

*New this Fall: Read and Talk About Great Books

DIVE INTO EXCITING STORIES!

Are you a Middle School student who loves to read, argue about endings, or hunt for your next favorite book? In Book Club you’ll read about four books across a range of genres, take part in hands-on activities built around what you’re reading, and spend plenty of time talking through your thoughts with friends. There will be snacks. Whether you finish a novel a week or are still looking for the book that hooks you, this program is for you.

LED BY  Tara Peace, LJCDS Program and Outreach Librarian, and Rebekah Dawson, LJCDS Access and Instruction Librarian.

Program highlights

  • Roughly four books a session: each one purchased for the student to keep.
  • First title chosen: Isle of Ever by Jen Calonita.
  • Students choose what comes next: members have an active voice in selecting the books that follow.
  • Confidence in conversation: students practice self-expression and get comfortable talking with peers about what interests them.
  • Empathy through reading: discussion with friends builds understanding of perspectives other than their own.
  • Small by design: capped at 12 so everyone gets talking time.
  • Students leave with: a shelf of books that are theirs to keep.
