AM (Gr. 1–4): Mad Science: Secret Agent Lab
Become a secret agent and take a fascinating journey into the world of detection, forensics, and classified information. Learn code language to send secret messages as part of the mission. Use special spy glasses to help learn about surveillance and the important role it plays in security. Investigate a pretend crime scene and sift through clues to crack the case. Campers will become young inventors as they design bridges, construct marble roller coasters, and create their own cardboard city. They will explore real-world engineering concepts with hands-on projects, problem-solving games, and large-scale team challenges that bring creativity and construction to life. Shake up a flask of fun in the lab and become a junior chemist! Learn to recognize chemical reactions and mix up a few reactive ingredients for some sensational results. Check out the colors of chemistry with the power of pH paper and create a stopper-popping reaction. Students will engage in storytelling, informative, persuasive, and instructional speeches, as well as a series of impromptu speaking activities. This course will also cover the effective use of visual aids like PowerPoint and notecards to enhance presentations. Whether you're preparing for school presentations, leadership roles, or just looking to become a more confident speaker, this class will help you develop essential public speaking skills in a fun and supportive environment! Science is a constant companion, it does not only happen in the laboratory. This is especially true when it comes to the kitchen. Students explore the science behind cooking and baking and learn about hygiene, good practice and the medicinal benefits of various ingredients. AM (Gr. 5–8): Writing Skills
Spend the week working out those writing muscles. Practice writing stories, reviews and opinion pieces. Learn how to develop and organize ideas, get them on paper and share them with readers. Class is personalized for each student and their needs. What to bring: Laptop or tablet with a Google account (does not need to be a school account, can be personal) and Google Docs. PM (Gr. 5–8): Fashion and Costume Building
Have you ever watched a movie, musical, or video game and thought "I want to dress like that!"? Have you ever tried on clothes at a store, and felt like nothing really suited you? Do you dream about outfits that no one else seems to sell? Well -- this class is for! Fashion and Costume Building is a hands-on sewing class. We have a few sewing machines in our lab that we can use together, (You are also welcome to bring in your own machine, as long as it is either new or has been serviced at a sewing machine repair shop right before the class starts) and we will learn how to cut measure your size, cut a paper pattern on fabric, sew the pieces together, fit, and finish your work. Once you register for this course, please make sure to fill out this Google form, so that Mrs. Clemente knows what to plan for the class projects. In this immersive program, students engage with nonprofit organizations and participate in service activities by volunteering on-site locally. They learn about the nonprofit sector and the following: Understand the context of our service: politically, historically, emotionally and environmentally Think critically about the types of service with which we are engaged and the root causes of the need for it Focus on collaborative relationships with community partners and center them in the design, facilitation and evaluation of service projects Expand our understanding of ourselves, our community and the world Remember that each person, habitat, and space has inherent dignity, and avoid making assumptions based on our own experiences. PM (Gr. 5–8): Kodely: 1: Inventors Lab – Engineering & Design Thinking
Campers will become young inventors and problem-solvers as they take on engineering challenges, hands-on design projects, and real-world problem-solving missions. Working in teams, they will prototype, test, and refine their inventions using recycled materials, maker tools, and creative engineering strategies. Campers will tackle bridge-building competitions, marble roller coaster challenges, and chain-reaction machines, learning the basics of structural design, forces, and motion. They will also engage in outdoor engineering games, designing and testing solutions to complete real-world-inspired missions. AM (Gr. 5–12): Ceramics–Wheel Throwing
It’s time to explore personal expression through the versatile and oh-so-messy medium of clay using the pottery wheel. Students learn various forming techniques emphasizing wheel throwing and the production of functional pottery forms. AM (Gr. 8–12): The Art of Effective Writing
Expository writing is the focus of this class, fine-tuning research and writing skills. After a brief in-class lesson, students work independently on projects and writing. All grammar, syntax, paper writing and structure feedback will be tailored to the student-specific grade level and individual needs. At the end of the week, students have an effective paper and bibliography that they can use as a model for the next school year. The topic is different each week the course is offered, so students are invited to sign up for more than one session. FULL-DAY–SPORTS (Gr. 1–4): APEX: School of Movement: Parkour
APEX PK Camps include activities like vaulting, flipping, swinging, games, obstacle courses, arts and crafts, perseverance training, self-discipline, character development and more. They teach safe and sustainable parkour by using a method that starts slowly and progresses with the student’s skill level. Transportation from LJCDS is provided. What to bring: Participants should wear comfortable clothing and sneakers. Campers should bring a non-perishable lunch, morning and afternoon snacks, and a refillable water bottle. FULL DAY–SPORTS (Ages 7 – 13): Positive Adventures
This camp is for young adventurers to experience a variety of outdoor activities that help build important skills. Campers develop confidence and tackle new challenges while learning to work together and support their friends. Activities include snorkeling, surfing, kayaking, rock climbing, hiking and community service. Camp activities are tailored to each child based on age and experience level. Under the guidance of experienced guides and outdoor educators, campers learn the skills necessary for each experience in a fun and supportive environment. Transportation from LJCDS is provided. What to bring: Campers should bring sun protection clothing, a non-perishable lunch, morning and afternoon snacks, and a refillable water bottle. PM–SPORTS (Gr. 5–8): Torrey Coed Golf Camp
This four-day camp provides an introduction to golf fundamentals including putting, chipping, ball striking, rules and etiquette. The first two days will consist of players using the brand new golf simulators on campus at LJCDS and using the short game area and mini golf course at Del Mar golf center. The next two days will be on course at Mission Bay golf course where players will have the opportunity to further develop their skills on the golf course. Players MUST have some prior golf knowledge and play experience. Players must have their own golf clubs, golf balls and any other equipment they feel necessary. READY, SET! This camp is designed for the aspiring young athlete who wants to develop cheer skills in an exciting, creative and fun atmosphere. AM–SPORTS (Gr. 1–5): Torrey Soccer Camp
(Open for both girls and boys) Head Soccer Coach Corbin Prychun invites all youth soccer players to join him for a fun week of fitness, passing, dribbling, and finishing on the field! Using techniques that are built on developing future Torrey soccer players, your athlete will spend the morning moving and playing the world's most popular game. The final day will be spent competing in a mini World Cup tournament where players of similar age and ability will have a chance to showcase their skills. What to Bring: Each player must bring their own soccer equipment including, socks, shin guards, cleats, a soccer ball and water bottle. Keepers should bring gloves as well.
