Join LJCDS Middle School Science Educator Mr. Bessler, a two-time Greater San Diego Science & Engineering Fair Teacher of the Year, in an outstanding program to help students craft engaging science fair projects.   • Music Lessons Winter

    These after-school lessons are available through a partnership with Villa Musica, a local non-profit community music center. They take place on campus and are designed to be a nurturing environment where students can further develop skills they learn during the day with music classes and ensembles directed by LJCDS music teachers. Parents will be billed through the school for lesson fees. Lesson options include: Private violin lessons (Grades 1–12) Private piano lessons (Grades 1–12) Private voice lessons (Grades 1-12) Private guitar lessons (Grades 3–12) Students with private lessons will meet with their teacher for 30 minutes between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. one day a week.   • Pine Tones

    The Pine Tones is LJCDS’ Lower and Middle School choir. It is open to any student who wants to sing; no audition or prior experience is required. The Pine Tones will perform at several school and community events throughout the school year, including a day at Disneyland Resort with a Disney Cast Member choir workshop in March and a final performance in May. This program runs in the fall, winter, and spring sessions from Sept. 9–May 19. There is no class on school holidays plus Jan. 6. Price includes uniforms, All Kids Create festival fees, and Disney workshop transportation and admission.   • Lower School Strings

    Students choose to learn to play the violin or cello. This class focuses on technique and note-reading skills, with at least two concert performances each school year. In addition to the after-school lessons, students receive a group class weekly during recess or PE time. Participation in this program is contingent on the student taking private lessons concurrently outside of school. Students can be in both strings and the PE tennis program.   • Lower School Orchestra (Audition based)

    Advanced Grade 3 and 4 students who show competency with note reading may be invited to join the Lower School Orchestra. They may audition in the fall or be recommended by the instructor. Grade 2 students who demonstrate an advanced proficiency level, study privately outside of school, and show developmental readiness may also audition or be recommended by the instructor. Orchestra members participate in two weekly group lessons during the school day and perform in at least three concerts each school year. Students can be in both strings and the PE tennis program.   • Freestyle Martial Arts: Cool Cats (K)

    Cool Cats kindergarten program teaches confidence, focus, and social skills through the fundamentals of martial arts (awareness, traditional karate, kicking, and boxing). Students receive a complimentary Freestyle Martial Arts T-shirt and white belt to wear to every class. Led by Freestyle Martial Arts Instructor Maia Hayden
  • Little Torrey Travelers

    This program blends the movement, language, music, and culture of a wide variety of countries around the globe.   • LS Homework Club (Gr 3–4)

    Get a head start during this quiet study time. Students receive support and guidance as they complete their weekly assignments and prepare for upcoming class projects. This program provides a structured, consistent framework for completing homework and practicing organizational skills. Students should bring their assignments and a book for weekly reading to each session and be ready to work for the hour. Additional cross-disciplinary project-based learning activities are available for those students who are interested. Led by LJCDS Lower School Educators Ms. Levin (Grade 3) and Mr. Foley (Grade 4)
  • MS Homework Club (Gr. 5–6)

    Get your homework done with your Middle School English teachers! Students will receive support in completing their weekly assignments and preparing for quizzes, tests, and projects. This program will guide students in developing their executive functioning skills, such as planning, time management, prioritization, and perseverance, to maximize their academic potential. Students should bring their weekly assignments, laptops, and study materials to each session. Led by LJCDS English Educators Miranda Katz (Grade 5) and Christa Bentley (Grade 6)
  • Kodely: LEGO® Design Thinkers (K–Gr. 2)

    Students unleash their creativity and problem-solving skills using LEGO bricks to tackle fun challenges. They’ll learn foundational engineering concepts, build critical thinking skills, and explore design thinking through hands-on projects. This engaging experience fosters collaboration, innovation, and a love for learning as they bring their ideas to life through playful exploration and teamwork. Led by Kodely

    Begin learning the cello or continue your studies with Bing Yan. Each session inspires creativity, encourages environmental consciousness, and fosters a deeper appreciation for the arts.     Students unleash their creativity while learning about the environment. In this program, young artists will dive into painting, drawing, and crafting with repurposed materials, creating stunning artworks that reflect their growing understanding of nature and sustainability. Students can also work in their art journals, documenting their artistic journey and experimenting with new techniques each week.     Explore 3D modeling with TinkerCAD in this hands-on workshop. Learn the basics of creating 3D models using intuitive tools—from futuristic buildings and personalized jewelry to mechanical contraptions and educational models. Perfect for budding designers and tech enthusiasts, TinkerCAD makes 3D modeling interactive, enjoyable, and versatile. Led by Kodely
  • Violin Group Class

    Weekly group instruction creates an encouraging learning environment for students by providing performance experience and peer interaction. Students are required to rent or purchase an instrument before the first class. Classes are geared towards establishing ensemble and solo performing skills. Classes aim to promote the student’s interest in music and the instrument through interactive and fun approaches and rewarding experiences of achievements. Led by Villa Musica
  • Mandarin for Beginners (K–Gr. 4)

    In this Mandarin Chinese immersion class, students learn and improve their Chinese skills based on weekly topics. They practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students engage in Chinese culture with games, songs, stories, drawings, art, and more. This program is for the beginner to intermediate level—no experience or prior knowledge is required, but helpful. Led by Sherry Yang

    Students learn the fundamentals of kickboxing, traditional karate, and self-defense. All students receive a complimentary Freestyle Martial Arts T-shirt and white belt to wear to every class.   • Little Torrey LAX (Lacrosse) (K–Gr. 4)

    Little Torrey LAX is for kindergarten through Grade 4 students looking to learn more about lacrosse. No equipment is needed; just bring a pair of sneakers and a water bottle. From running around scooping up ground balls to scoring goals, this program aims to introduce the fundamentals of the sport, all while having fun.     These young artists will explore their creativity through painting, drawing, and using repurposed materials to craft unique masterpieces. Each session includes time to work in their personalized art journals, capturing their imaginative ideas, and learning new artistic techniques. The hands-on activities not only foster artistic skills but also teach important lessons about sustainability and the beauty of repurposing materials, combining a journey of artistic discovery and environmental awareness.     Join Seaside Arts Center’s musical theater team for an abbreviated production of The Little Mermaid in a program emphasizing the theatrical principles of play, ensemble, and empathy. This experience not only empowers individual students to speak with full voices, stand confidently in front of others, and lead with a playful imagination but also empowers them within a collaborative ensemble.     Checkmate! Grab your bishops and knights and join Excelsior Chess for an exciting 8-week chess club session. Trained and experienced coaches bring enthusiasm to each team workout and share their passion and insights into the game. Group participation, playing skills, and sportsmanship are evaluated at each workout, and at the session’s end, every player receives an award acknowledging their achievement.
